Why Black Friday

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, often regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Most major retailers have opened very early and offered promotional sales to kick off the holiday shopping season.

The name originated in Philadelphia in 1960s, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic. "Store aisles were jammed. Escalators were nonstop people. It was the first day of the Christmas shopping season and despite the economy, folks here went on a buying spree…..traffic cop trying to control a crowd of jaywalkers, they think in terms of headaches it gives them. "

--- Pennsylvania's Titusville Herald, November 29, 1975

Another explanation was that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss ("in the red") from January through November, and "Black Friday" indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or "in the black".

But the sale price becomes really good after Christmas. If you don’t mind the unpopular items, this can be a good time to stack gifts!
